Laduma Ngxokolo, born in 1986, honed his knitting skills from his mother and furthered his expertise by studying textile design and technology at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. His studies culminated in the creation of MaXhosa by Laduma, a brand deeply inspired by traditional Xhosa designs, colors, and motifs, aiming to contemporize and showcase the beauty of Xhosa culture to modern youth.
Laduma's designs garnered acclaim at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg, earning him international recognition, including winning the South African Society of Dyers and Colourists' design competition in 2010. His success underscores the importance of African designers authentically representing their cultural heritage, challenging cultural imperialism. Despite tempting offers from large retailers, Laduma prioritizes brand integrity and careful decision-making, turning down partnerships to retain control over the brand's trajectory. H
is strategic approach has led to international showcases in cities like Berlin, London, New York, and Paris, with the ambition to establish MaXhosa by Laduma as a premium international brand while honoring its South African roots.
