
Claver Gatete
Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)
Claver Gatete is the tenth Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, appointed in October 2023. Prior to this, he served as Ambassador of Rwanda to the United Nations. He has also served as Minister of Infrastructure, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, and Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda. He also served as Ambassador of Rwanda to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Iceland.
Mr. Gatete is a seasoned diplomat and economist with acclaimed recognition on Africa’s development issues. He was awarded Finance Minister of the Year in 2015 and 2016 at the African Bankers Awards and by Global Capital respectively. He has held various roles on a number of Presidential initiatives, boards and advisory councils. He holds Master's and Bachelor’s degrees in agricultural economics from the University of British Columbia.
